The Amazon Labor Union has affiliated with the 1.3-million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the organization announced in social media posts on Tuesday.
The affiliation was announced by Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien during the union’s general executive board meeting in Washington, D.C., according to a LinkedIn post.
Affiliation with the Teamsters union may open the door for workers across Amazon’s vast distribution network to organize more easily under a labor group with a massive administrative structure in place. The Teamsters union has increased efforts to organize Amazon’s warehouse and logistics employees since launching its Amazon Division in September 2022.
O’Brien said at the time that the union is well-positioned to coordinate Amazon employees’ organizing efforts.
“Our new division affords a nationwide network of resources to all Amazon workers, behind the wheel of any truck or hard at work in any facility, to strategize with the union, mobilize in their communities, and succeed together,” he said when the Amazon Division launched.
A worker-led group of Amazon warehouse employees in Staten Island, New York formed the Amazon Labor Union as part of an effort seeking better pay and improved working conditions.
