Drayage and logistics provider ContainerPort Group is moving its Charleston, South Carolina, operations to new digs on the north side of the city with eight acres of yard space, the company announced last week.
A pair of 2,000-square-foot buildings at the property will house ContainerPort Group’s dedicated services division and its sister carrier, Bristol Transportation. Officials planned to cut a ribbon at the site this week.
“This expansion enables us to focus on developing customized solutions for our customers and owner-operators, as we expect cargo volumes diverted for the west coast ports to remain on the east coast,” Joey Palmer, company president, said in a statement.
More than 1,300 owner-operators drive for ContainerPort Group across 49 states, according to the company’s website. ContainerPort Group’s 26th terminal opened in Greer, South Carolina, in 2021.
Adam Campbell, Bristol Transportation’s Charleston terminal manager, told Transport Dive the biggest upgrade is the five more acres of yard space in a market where real estate comes at a premium — and where the state has invested billions to add port capacity.
The new ContainerPort Group site can store 200-300 shipping containers, and it could eventually hold bonded freight, he said.
“That's definitely the biggest advancement,” Campbell said. “We've got that yard space that a lot of truckers don't have, necessarily.”
The larger North Charleston space will provide for further growth of ContainerPort Group’s dedicated service, which launched last fall and specializes in delivering “predictable, white-glove service for high-volume customers,” according to the company.
The additional room will be a differentiator for Bristol as a drayage provider, Campbell said.
“We now have capacity to take on additional containers, and then be a top contender in the Charleston market,” he said.
The increased storage area and additional truck parking from the previous Clements Ferry facility aren’t the only upgrades truck drivers will appreciate. The property has a cutting-edge security system and improved lighting, and both buildings are equipped with dedicated driver areas offering Wi-Fi access, kitchenettes and private restrooms.
