The beginning of Raj Subramaniam's tenure as FedEx CEO has been both transformative and turbulent.
In June — his first month on the job — the successor to founder Fred Smith outlined a straightforward focus on more profitable shipments and unveiled a $2 billion plan to overhaul the company's network.
But as Subramaniam began working to shake up FedEx, tensions flared in its relationship with Ground delivery contractors. An outspoken leader for this group, Spencer Patton, attempted to pressure the company to make changes he said would help inflation-weary contractors.
FedEx ultimately quashed Patton's campaign, but it now faces a much larger challenge: declining global demand. As a result, the company has shifted into cost-cutting mode to shield itself from macroeconomic pressures as it waits for volumes to recover.
