Flexport plans to open a fulfillment center in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, by mid-January, a spokesperson said in an email Tuesday.
The freight forwarder will offer its full suite of omnichannel services at the facility, including e-commerce fulfillment, reserve storage and inbound cross docking.
"This is a strategic addition to Flexport’s fulfillment network and will extend our port-to-porch offering as its central location provides access to about 26% of the US population and major transportation hubs in New Jersey and New York," the spokesperson said.
Flexport has touted "port-to-porch" services since its acquisition of Shopify Logistics gave it e-commerce fulfillment and last-mile delivery capabilities, building off of existing services moving international freight to a destination port.
The 1.1 million-square-foot facility is hiring for various roles including general manager and operations manager, said Cody Moreland, Flexport's director of network operations, in a LinkedIn post.
The Phillipsburg site is Flexport's third large fulfillment center, with the company already having facilities in Atlanta and Los Angeles. Flexport also plans to establish fulfillment centers in the southern U.S., the spokesperson said.
The site's announced opening follows Flexport's decision to lay off 20% of its workforce in its push to return to profitability. That rebound will come by "delivering outstanding global logistics and technology solutions that solve customer problems," CEO Ryan Petersen said in a published note last month.
