Intermodal rail volumes continue to grow at the Port of Savannah.
Rail cargo volumes reached 44,902 containers in March, an increase of 22% year over year, according to a press release from the Georgia Ports Authority. The Southeast port also handled close to 436,000 total TEUs that month, marking a 19% rise year over year.
“GPA’s intermodal team and our partners, CSX and Norfolk Southern, are doing phenomenal work, with cargo reaching inland destinations only three days after crossing our docks,” Georgia Ports Authority President and CEO Griff Lynch said in the release. “Cargo discharges from a vessel, arrives at inland destinations the next day and is available to customers by day three.”
Completed projects such as the Mason Mega Rail Terminal are helping expand intermodal cargo expansion in Savannah. The Georgia port says it is the largest on-port rail facility in North America with a less than one day rail dwell. Its services offer daily rail departures to major markets such as Dallas, Memphis, Tennessee, and Atlanta.
Other infrastructure projects include the Blue Ridge Connector in Gainesville, Georgia, an inland network facility linking Northeast Georgia with the Port of Savannah. The project is under construction and expected to open in 2026.
