Dive Brief:
- JD.com’s logistics arm has launched an international express delivery service from China to North America and Europe, the e-commerce company announced in December.
- The service, offered through JD Logistics, is currently available for individuals in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, with doorstep pickups handled by in-house couriers. It will initially cover deliveries in 23 countries in North America and Europe.
- "Looking ahead, JD Logistics plans to extend the reach of this service, expanding its availability throughout China," according to a company news release.
Dive Insight:
The new service marks another milestone in JD.com's efforts to leverage its massive fulfillment infrastructure through JD Logistics.
The subsidiary, which operates more than 1,600 warehouses and already offers same-day fulfillment in major European markets, continues to bolster its supply chain capabilities after posting 16% revenue growth in the third quarter.
Last year, JD Logistics rolled out a strategic partnership with France-based Geopost to strengthen express shipping services between China and Europe. Additionally, it expanded its express delivery business in Hong Kong and Macau.
"JD Logistics’ venture into international express delivery is a natural extension of its existing capabilities," which include last-mile delivery, linehaul transport, cross-border logistics and cold chain services, the company said.
JD.com is one of several e-commerce companies maximizing the use of its fulfillment capabilities to draw in more revenue. Amazon launched a mix of supply chain services for its marketplace sellers last year, and Wish created an end-to-end small parcel delivery service using its network of third-party carriers.
