A.P. Moller-Maersk opened a full-service, in-transit Miami air cargo gateway in April, according to a May 9 press release.
The 90,000-square-foot facility is fully staffed by Maersk Air Freight’s forwarding team, and includes U.S. Customs bonded Container Freight Station and Certified Cargo Screening Facility certifications, per the release.
The air cargo hub focuses on transhipping European and Asian cargo via Miami to Latin America through freighter and passenger capacity as part of the company’s larger efforts to improve connectivity to Latin American markets.
Miami International Airport (MIA) currently handles 85% of all air imports and 80% of exports from the Latin American and Caribbean region, according to the airport’s website. In 2023, MIA handled more than 2.8 million tons of cargo.
“Our Miami Gateway offers an alternative routing option that can provide predictable transit times from our global network, improving connectivity, flexibility, and reliability,” Maersk Regional Head of Air Freight for Latin America Fabio Acerbi said in the release. “It supports the North American and Asian export market, opening new possibilities for our customers in Latin America.”
The Miami hub also includes truck connectivity through Maerk’s North American station network, Brent Mayhew, the company’s regional head of air freight for North America, said in the release.
The shipping and logistics company has been expanding its air cargo footprint after launching Maersk Air Cargo in 2022. Maersk’s latest addition to its global gateway network is modeled after hubs in Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles — all of which have opened in the last two years.
