Dive Brief:
- Shipt, a delivery service owned by Target, is partnering with retailer Bed Bath & Beyond to offer same-day delivery across the U.S., the company announced in a Friday press release.
- The partnership will allow customers to access same-day deliveries through both companies' website and mobile app platforms. Delivery services will also be available for Buy Buy Baby, a part of the Bed Bath & Beyond brand, according to the statement.
- Bed Bath & Beyond also has a partnership with Instacart, another last-mile delivery service, in anticipation of high demand for peak season. Altogether, the retailer expects to reach over 80% of American households with the two partnerships, as stated in a press release last month.
Dive Insight:
Bed Bath & Beyond will use third-party delivery services to meet peak season demand for speed. The offer for same-day delivery expands on steps detailed in a May statement, including buy online, pickup in store and contactless curbside pickup at 1,350 locations, pluss adding pickup at an additional 600 stores.
"As we look forward to the important holiday season, this year will be one like no other. We are prepared for customers to shop earlier and have expanded our omni services with Same Day Delivery," Chief Brand Officer Cindy Davis said on the retailer's latest earnings call.
The partnerships with third-party apps Shipt and Instacart allow Bed Bath & Beyond to grow its omnichannel presence and delivery options beyond what would be possible with its own operations.
Walmart and Target have already stated their plans to beef up e-commerce operations and increase staffing for same-day services, as this year's extended holiday season kicks into gear.
Many retailers have shored up same-day delivery as they prepare for the coming months and beyond. Shipt and Instacart — best known for delivering groceries — have added Costco, CVS Pharmacy and Petco, among others to their lists of clients, according to each company's website.
