Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits plans to relocate its warehouse operations from the St. Louis area to a facility near Kansas City, Missouri. The move will impact 94 employees, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act letter dated Aug. 2.
The company is offering employees at the St. Charles, Missouri, plant a job at the new facility on the western side of the state in Raymore. Those who are unable to transfer to the new facility will be permanently laid off starting Nov. 1.
Jobs affected from the relocation includes 63 warehouse positions that are part of Teamsters Local 688, an operations coordinator, a manager of outbound fulfillment and another for inbound.
Southern Glazer’s is making the warehouse changes as it dives into significant investments to expand its operations.
The company’s logistics and operations teams are spending on new facilities as well as routing and forecasting technologies, Bobby Burg, chief supply chain officer said in a July 31 press release.
“This includes new state-of-the-art distribution centers in Louisiana, Missouri, Nevada and South Carolina, as well as in an additional facility in Kentucky for the recently launched Ankaa Global Logistics subsidiary," Burg said. "In addition, the Company has committed to replacing 435 delivery vehicles with more efficient, environmentally friendly vehicles, as well as investing in 50 all-electric tractor units to be delivered in 2025."
The company plans to expand its operations footprint further with the planned acquisition of Horizon Beverage Group, a beverage alcohol distributor in New England. Horizon employs more than 600 people, operates 800,000 square feet of warehouse space and has a fleet of nearly 100 delivery vehicles, according to a July 25 press release.
“Horizon’s trading partners will gain access to Southern Glazer’s world-class commercial, supply chain, digital, and data insights capabilities,” Horizon Group Co-Chairman Jim Rubenstein said in the release.
