Dive Brief:
- BlackBerry announced it has launched a radar equipped tracking system that sends near real-time data on the location and condition of truck trailers and containers. The system will debut with Canadian carrier, Caravan Transport Group Inc.
- The BlackBerry Radar will compete with products from Orbcomm Inc. and Fleetmatics Group Plc.
- Data is delivered from Blackberry's cloud platform. Information can be accessed from a desktop, tablet, smart phone that will have immediate analysis, decision-making and reporting.
Dive Insight:
With a promise of a quick install product, BlackBerry's entrance into the tracking system market could mean lower prices across the board for all monitoring devices. Many companies occupy this space, but BlackBerry is particularly motivated to establish itself outside of the personal device market.
Two of the biggest deterrents to installing the equipment has been interruption of workflow, and cost. If BlackBerry Radar solves for those two points, the industry could make a swifter move toward employing this technology.
This device could have large implications for the "cold chain," as a more demanding system is necessary to limit contamination risk for foods and pharmaceuticals.
