Dive Insight:
XPO's new platform marks the 3PL's emergence as a global technology company, as well as a comprehensive logistics provider.
The company's initiative shows how pertinent technology has become to supply chains, and also reinforces the need for supply chain companies to constantly innovate to remain competitive.
Earlier this week, UPS CIO Juan Perez told MODEX 2018 conference attendees UPS is now a "technology-enabled business" and self-disruption is key to keeping up with other players — like XPO.
3PLs including UPS and XPO embrace this ethos by appropriately gauging customer needs and expectations, then finding a creative solution. In this case, that means providing technology solutions that allow shippers to identify opportunities, plan shipments, assign loads and track them from origin to destination.
Such a platform is right on trend with shipper needs. According to a recent survey, retailers are more interested in full supply chain visibility and precision than fast shipping from their 3PLs. The new platform from XPO will make the company that much more attractive to shippers.
